QuickStart

Introduction #

Follow this guide to get connected as quickly as possible. Even a brainlet could do it, I promise.

Matrix #

  1. Matrix is an open protocol, meaning that you can use any client you wish to connect to a server. You can find a list here, finding the clients themselves on the app store or their respective websites. We recommend Element, as it is the most maintained and feature-complete. We also have a self-hosted web client available here.
  2. Register an account with the registration link that has been given to you. If you don’t have one, ask the admin to give one to you.
  3. With the client open, change the homeserver from ‘matrix.org’ to ‘matrix.deadbios.net’; then login with your username and password.
  4. Use the ’explore public rooms’ feature to find rooms. Spaces are the equivalent of discord servers, and rooms are like text channels or DMs.
  5. See the optional full matrix guide for information on how to setup sticker packs.

Mumble #

We use mumble for gaming or anything that requires voice isolation, even though matrix supports voice and video calls. It’s rather cozy, but it does differ from discord in some ways, as well as our use of it.

  1. Download Mumble for Desktop, iOS, or android.
  2. Once launched, hit ‘Add new…’ within the server browser. Give it a name, and then fill out the information like so, swapping ‘bitwise’ for your own username:

add-new

  1. Mumble uses ‘access tokens’ to manager passwords for channels, rather than prompting for a password upon entry. Hit ‘Access Tokens…’ under the server dropdown menu. Add all of the passwords you’ve been given by whoever invited you.

edit-access

  1. Click on any of the text channels that you wish in order to join them. Locker Room Talk is generally considered the hub for cross-episode intermingling.
  2. BRAINLETS SKIP THIS STEP: Right-clicking on your name and hitting “register” will give you a TLS certificate to ensure no one else can use your name, but it’s local to your device. Thus, if you register on another device such as your phone, you must use a new name (possibly with its own certificate) or import this certificate.

Zero Tier #

TBD. This service will replace Hamachi.
